Dallas, Texas — On Tuesday, November 12, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., the Honorable Dr. Janet Álvarez González, a distinguished public servant, academic, and artist, officially took the oath of office as Legislator for District 25 of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature (TSHL). The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Fifth Court of Appeals of Texas in Dallas, Texas 75202, where Chief Justice J.J. Koch presided over the proceedings.

Throughout her career, Dr. Álvarez González has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service. She served in the Texas State Guard with the rank of Major and earned the Texas State Medal of Merit for her service. Additionally, she worked as a Senior Analyst in the Governor’s Office for Homeland Security, where she actively contributed to critical statewide initiatives focused on security and emergency preparedness.

Moreover, Dr. Janet Álvarez González makes history as the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the bipartisan Texas Silver-Haired Legislature. Emphasizing the importance of inclusive representation, she stated, “Forty-eight percent of the senior population in Texas is Hispanic. Therefore, it is essential that our leadership reflect both the diversity and the strength of our state’s senior community.”

In addition to her public service, Dr. Álvarez González is an internationally award-winning filmmaker, writer, journalist, and professor. In this new legislative role, she plans to expand opportunities for older adults by promoting senior participation in the film industry. At the same time, she will advocate for the elimination of property taxes for senior citizens, thereby strengthening economic stability and creating greater opportunities for older Texans.

Reflecting on her appointment, Dr. Álvarez González remarked, “I am deeply honored to continue serving the people of Texas through the Silver-Haired Legislature. Not only is it a privilege to help shape policies that protect and empower our older adults, but it is also an opportunity to foster cultural and creative engagement across generations.”

Furthermore, the Honorable Dr. Álvarez González now serves on both the State Affairs Committee and the Communications Committee. Notably, she is also the youngest member of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature.

Finally, the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature (TSHL) operates as a nonpartisan, volunteer organization composed of elected representatives aged 60 and older. Through its work, TSHL advises the Texas Legislature on issues affecting older adults and actively promotes policies that advance dignity, independence, and well-being for the state’s senior population.
